The Monarch Formally Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Prince Title

In a definitive action, King Charles has officially stripped Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his Royal Highness attribute and his title of prince.

The changes were formalized by issuing letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were recorded in the Gazette.

The official notice declared: “The king has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that the individual in question shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”

Another record confirmed the stripping of the dukedom from the roll of peerage, with immediate effect.

It read: “His Majesty has been pleased to direct by warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.”

Context of the Royal Action

This move follows mounting scrutiny over Andrew's connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.

The author claimed that she was assaulted by the former prince after being brought by Epstein, allegations that Andrew has always strenuously denied.

Procedure of Removing Titles

The king employed his monarchical powers—accepted authorities held by the monarch—after discussions with government advisers, rather than through legislative action.

Letters patent and warrants are instruments of this prerogative, used to grant or remove honors and styles.

Since the HRH style is conferred by such documents, it can be revoked through the same process.

Additional Measures and Support

After the palace statement, the lord chancellor was instructed to draft the necessary documents for the removal of titles.

This action also includes Mountbatten Windsor giving up his tenancy on Royal Lodge, a 30-room royal property where he has resided for two decades.

The government endorsed the monarch's decision.

Exception

Despite the loss of titles, it was confirmed that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands War.
