NFL Week Five Surprise: Eagles Fall to Broncos while Patriots Stun Bills

NFL Action

The last two unbeaten teams in the NFL saw their perfect records shattered during the fifth week as both the Philadelphia Eagles along with Buffalo Bills endured surprising home defeats.

Denver's football team transformed from dark horses to front-page news thanks to an impressive rallying win against the current Super Bowl title holders the Eagles, before hopping on a flight for Sunday's London contest.

New England's squad then traveled to Buffalo and halted Buffalo's undefeated start with an impressive victory of their own in their initial national television game in twelve months.

The Baltimore Ravens suffered a third straight defeat - their defensive unit's struggles could be terminal for their play-off aspirations - while Dallas, Indianapolis, and Detroit enjoyed blowout wins on another eventful Sunday.

Denver Downs Title Holders

Not only was it beating the Super Bowl champions, but the way of their comeback from 14 points down that made the Broncos' win by 21-17 in Philadelphia such a signature success.

Philadelphia had won 10 games in a row, 12 straight at home and 20 of their last 21 total before Denver's signal-caller Bo Nix orchestrated two scoring drives in the final five minutes and a last-minute field goal.

The Eagles are currently 4-1 but there exists significant concern about the offence, which sits among the poorest performing in the NFL. Wideout DaVonta Smith says they are not "in sync" with QB Jalen Hurts.

The Broncos' defensive unit, which sacked Hurts on six occasions, had much to contribute with it, and, combined with an established starting QB in Nix and elite coach in Sean Payton, they possess all the components to mount a serious challenge.

The Broncos meet the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Primetime Patriots Shock Buffalo

Should the Broncos' victory was somewhat anticipated, nobody saw the Patriots marching into Buffalo and defeating Josh Allen's Bills, but they did so with tremendous resilience.

Their initial national television appearance for Drake Maye produced a star-making showing as he led a game-winning field goal drive in the final moments to secure victory 23-20.

Maye was resilient and executed the right throws at crucial moments, many to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who delivered an outstanding performance for Mike Vrabel's team.

Vrabel was anticipated to improve the situation in New England, but such a significant victory arrived earlier than many predicted.

New England Defensive Unit

New England's defensive squad bottled up Buffalo's offensive efforts during their upset away win.

Baltimore Postseason Dreams Dashed?

The season is turning into a nightmare for Baltimore, who were without multiple key defenders as they were hammered 44-10 by the Houston Texans.

It equaled their biggest loss at home, and falling to 1-4 for the season means one of the pre-season Super Bowl favourites have only a slim chance of reaching the postseason.

Baltimore are currently 4-11 playing without superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was injured, but it is an exceptionally poor defensive unit that is the real problem - for a team that have been known for stout defense historically.

The Texans strolled to victory as Baltimore became the first team in the Super Bowl era to allow a minimum of 37 points in four of their first five games. Their campaign is already over.

Detroit, Tampa and Indianapolis Reach 4-1

The Lions' backfield tandem Gibbs and Montgomery registered a touchdown in one contest for the 14th time - a joint NFL mark - as Detroit defeated Cincinnati 37-24.

The win made it four victories in a row for the league's top scorers the Lions, but not one against opponents with positive records.

A more unexpected 4-1 team are Indianapolis. With Jonathan Taylor scoring a hat-trick in their decisive hammering of the Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Daniel Jones looking like a new man, they will be a tough match for any side.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the four-win group with a mesmeric 38-35 win in Seattle in which the sides traded nine scores in 10 sparkling drives before Seattle cracked first with a final-minute interception.

The kicker kicked the game-winner with the final play of the game for the second time this season. Each of the Bucs' wins have been secured in the last minute.

New Orleans and Tennessee Get Help for First Wins

The way New Orleans and Tennessee began the season, they required assistance to secure their first wins, and they got plenty due to several comical mistakes from the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals.

After a strong opening from New York rookie Jaxson Dart, the Giants committed five giveaways - including one decisively returned for a touchdown - while also allowing Rashid Shaheed to find the end zone on an 87-yard reception as New Orleans won 26-14.

Arizona were even worse as they blew a substantial advantage primarily due to two massive mistakes.

First, Emari Demercado inexplicably dropped the football just before reaching the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown.

Worse followed when Arizona intercepted Cam Ward close to their own goal line, then lost the football into the end zone for Tyler Lockett to recover as Tennessee snapped a 10-game slide with a 22-21 victory.

Tyler Lockett

The receiver registered one of the most farcical touchdowns we'll see this year.

This left the Jets as the sole victory-less squad left in the NFL after their punishing 37-22 defeat by Dallas.

The quarterback became the initial athlete in NFL history to surpass 4K through the air and 1K on the ground in his initial twenty professional contests as he returned from being hurt to guide the Washington Commanders to a notable 27-10 win at Los Angeles.

Rico Dowdle was the standout performer for the Carolina Panthers with 206 rushing yards in their thrilling 27-24 win over Miami.
