Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Customers Could Be Eligible for a Portion of a £480m Compensation in the Britain

Mobile phone users may be eligible for compensation

Close to 30 million people in the UK who bought an Apple and/or Samsung Electronics mobile phone between the year 2015 and the year 2024 could be eligible to approximately 17 pounds per person should a customer advocacy organization wins in its legal action against the American tech giant Qualcomm.

Court Case Commences On Monday

The advocacy organization is taking the technology corporation to the CAT in the UK capital this week.

The legal proceedings between the consumer group and the chipmaker is anticipated to last over a month.

The group is accusing the tech firm of restrictive behavior.

The group asserts that the company forced Apple & Samsung to pay excessive costs and patent charges for essential handset components, which then increased the price of those mobile phones for buyers.

The Details the Legal Action Will Decide

The legal proceedings beginning now will look into whether Qualcomm possessed control and, if so, whether it abused a powerful stance.

Should the watchdog is successful, there will be a subsequent step aiming to obtain £480m from the tech firm, to be divided between an projected twenty-nine million UK consumers affected.

The consumer group is claiming compensation for all affected Apple Inc. & Samsung smartphones purchased between 1 October 2015 and January 9, 2024.

The organization states this would likely work out at about 17 pounds per person.

Past Allegations and Qualcomm's Position

The company has previously claimed the legal action has "no foundation".

A similar legal action against Qualcomm is ongoing in Canada, and the corporation has also previously been penalized by the European Union for antitrust violations.

The Federal Trade Commission in the US sued the firm for restrictive tactics in the way it licensed its technology in the year 2017, but had its claim dismissed in the year 2020.

Importance of the Legal Action

The head of the organization stated: "This legal action is a major milestone. It illustrates how the collective strength of buyers - backed by us - can be used to make the largest corporations to be accountable should they abuse their dominant position."

The chipmaker is one of the world's biggest producers of mobile processors and has encountered claims about unfair practices previously.
